From the Head

Issue #35: 19/04/2024 King Edward's Witley Head

Dear KESW Community,

A very warm welcome back to what promises to be a busy and wonderful summer term. We have been blessed with sunshine and rain in true April style. It is always good to welcome pupils back and this term is no exception. We have all enjoyed catching up on news and listening to tales of travel, and of course, the challenges found in sustained revision.

All staff met on Monday for safeguarding training and to reflect on the feedback from the stakeholder survey. This will inform and shape our work this term as we look to plan for continuous improvement while celebrating the everyday and pursuing excellence.

After considering your recent feedback, we have decided to adjust the timing of the Bridewell Bulletin, publishing it on an occasional basis while maintaining communication about news and events on a weekly basis. Additionally, important events will continue to be updated on our online calendar. The Bridewell Bulletin serves as a brilliant source of celebration and news for both Schools within the Bridewell Royal Hospital Foundation.

As parents, friends and guardians, if you have any concerns about how your child or children have managed their revision or are feeling about the prospect of exams, then please do not hesitate to contact us. Fifth Form parents, I hope that you have had the opportunity to look through the guidance and information sent out by Mr Campbell, Head of Middle School.

This term promises to be exciting, not just on account of exams. Next Monday, I am delighted that we are doing something new by celebrating Earth Day. As a school, we will begin the day with an Earth Day assembly followed by a host of eco events organised by our Eco Committee. This is an initiative that we are sharing with our Year 7 from Barrow Hills. My thanks in advance to Mr Simon Lightman for co-ordinating the day. We look forward to sharing more about this.

As our external exam season also gets under way next week, I would like to wish all our GCSE, IB and A’Level pupils the very best of luck. I know that teachers and pupils have been working hard and will continue to do so. With much energy and attention focused on the exams I hope that all pupils will feel supported throughout the process and will be able to balance the pressure with opportunities to relax and take care.

Looking at the calendar for the summer term, it seems that there is a whirlwind of events, with sports days, end of year celebrations, pupil and staff cricket matches, House concerts, House drama and pupil showcases, Proms in the Park and a host of other KESW activities, all taking place in a little over ten weeks of school!

Amid the busyness we will make sure that we can deliberately pause and consider how to appreciate the community that we belong to. As we do so, we thank those who contribute to it, particularly those who are moving on and for whom this is their last term. With gratitude for all they have done, and with best wishes for their future, we say goodbye to Mr Sergei Baltacha and Mr Tony Brigham who worked here for over twenty-one years in the Estates Department; both have left for personal reasons. We will appoint a new Head of Football at which point more information will be shared.

I wish you all a very happy and relaxing weekend.

With my best wishes,

Joanna Wright

Head
